nProbe is a diagnostics tool for use on most 1990-1999 Nissan and some Infiniti vehicles with the Nissan CONSULT diagnostics port. nProbe is an interface for a PC or PDA with nProbe software installed to communicate with the various ECMs controlling the vehicle.
"We are recommending the nProbe to shops and customers as the best substitute to date for the Nissan Consult...Damon at 300 Degree has convinced us that their nProbe will see many more refinements and features that will no doubt eclipse the Nissan Consult for logging abilities as well as user interface. We are now using the nProbe during dyno runs instead of the Consult whenever possible. Great start, look forward to the next update!" - Jim Wolf, Jim Wolf Technology, Inc.
"It [expletive deleted] rocks! The nProbe has been one of the easiest and most versatile tools I have ever used for diagnostics, monitoring, data acquisition, and tuning assistance. I find new uses for it everyday." - Kyle Puckett, SGP Racing.
"After using and owning the nProbe, I wish I hadn't paid the money I did for Nissan's CONSULT. Great Tool!" - Greg Dupree, Specialty Z.
- Communications with either PC or Palm PDA
- Monitoring of ECM functions (engine, climate control, automatic transmission, HICAS, Supplemental Restraint System)
- Data logging of engine ECM functions and playback
- Constant data logging of engine ECM when monitoring
- Work support functions where applicable
- Active Tests where applicable
- Threshold Alerts where applicable
- Logfile conversion to spreadsheet capabilities
- Future I/O for other possible product integration
nProbe will interface with most models of these 1990-1999 vehicles:
- 300ZX
- 240SX
- Sentra
- Se-R
- NX2000
- NX1600
- Maxima
- G20
- J30
- Q45
- most any other vehicle with the grey CONSULT diagnostics port (we're still testing and adding to the list, e-mail us for details if your vehicle is not listed). We have discovered incompatibility with the '98+ Maxima. We're looking into what it will take to be compatible with them.
nProbe will interface with most of these 1990-1999 engine control units:
- VG30DE(TT)
- SR20DE(T)
- GA16DE(T)
- KA24DE(T)
- most any other engine management system with the grey CONSULT diagnostics port (we're still testing and adding to the list, e-mail us for details if your engine type is not listed)
The complete nProbe product is composed of these parts:
- Diagnostics port cable
- ‘Null-modem’ cable
- Interface Box
- PC and Palm (including nProbe Lite) software CDROM
- Printed documentation
- Future software updates
- Internet support forum
nProbe will run on these PDAs: Palm III, IIIc, IIIx, IIIe, IIIxe, V, Vx, VII, VIIx, m100, m105, m125, m130, m500, m505, m515, i705, Tungsten Series (with Universal Palm Connector), & Zire 71 (Palm OS 3.1 and 4.1 NOTE: Palm OS 5 is not supported at the moment, we're looking into compatibility). The Palm must have RS232 serial capabilities. USB only Palms are not supported. We developed and tested on m105 and the III series, those being lower end PDAs the others should have no problems running nProbe. To achieve the full logging length, the Palm will need at least 8M of RAM. Sony claims the Clie product is 100% compatible, it is not. We are currently working to see if we can make nProbe work with Clie as well. At this time it is not supported.
nProbe will run on Windows 98 through XP. nProbe was developed and tested on Windows 2000 and XP. If you do not have a serial port, we are working on USB to serial adapter support. We highly recommend getting the adapter to work with some other piece or hardware before trying to interface with nProbe and having to troubleshoot and extra unknown when connected to nProbe outside of the standard com 1/2 serial port scenario.
Work Support
The work support options are purpose built control panels to perform specific work functions:
Self Diagnostic
Data Monitors
The engine monitor window or the strip chart window allows logging of all monitored aspects of the engine ECM. Just opening either of the monitor screens will start data logging, the unit constantly buffers the prior 45 seconds in case some anomaly happens and the data needs to be captured even though data was not officially being logged. Both screens allow real-time monitoring or scaled-time playback of data files.
Strip Chart
Playback Controls
Active Tests
These windows allow manipulation of various values or display of the status of on/off switches. The monitor window will open to show the status in a passive mode. A second window will open allowing access to various active tests.

The data monitor screen is a passive monitor of all the ECU scanned and controlled I/O. Logging works just like the PC software with a 45 second data buffer.

The Data Log Management page is either reached from the main nProbe menu, or from the Data Monitor page. There are 2 functions of the Data Log Management page depending on how it is accessed:
- Manage log files for use with the Data Monitors
- Transfer log files to the PC application

Log File Transfer
nProbe Lite is a simple monitoring application, it has 3 of the major functions of the Engine section of the full nProbe:
All three options are the same as they are for the full size nProbe application. The major difference between the two is nProbe Lite is designed for constant utilization. Simply starting the vehicle and turning the Palm on should be enough for data monitoring to start automatically instead of having to select the nProbe software and entering the engine data monitoring screen. The Palm checks to see if the engine is running or not. If it finds that it is running, it will switch to the data monitoring page.
Sales and Support
nProbe is no longer in production. Units can be found for sale from time to time in the classifieds on TwinTurbo.NET.
Note: Product screenshots may not exactly represent the actual software. Several small improvements have been made to the software since the creation of this webpage.
Note: we highly recommend having a factory service manual to reference when using nProbe. There are far too many diagnostic and maintenance procedures for us to rewrite existing works for all supported vehicles. The documentation with nProbe and nProbe itself is 300ZX (Z32) based (which has more functions then any other car nProbe is known to be compatible with), we're working on making the product and documentation as universal as possible for all supported vehicles for ease of use. nProbe is not a miracle product to instantly cure your car's problems. It is simply a tool to help you do so.
